“Lighting Up With Excitement: Service High School Biomedical Students Tour JBER Hospital”

ANCHorage, ALASKA (KTuu) - Pupils from Service High School’s Biomedical Career Academy (BCA) were recently granted an exclusive chance to delve into various professional avenues when they visited the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Hospital. This trip allowed them a deeper insight into the activities within its walls.

Many locations in the civilian sector are not accessible," explained BCA Program Leader Kaitlyn Williamson. "We were shown around, various professions along with different stages of those careers were presented, and our students had the opportunity to witness a fantastic variety of roles within a hospital setting.

Williamson mentioned that this presents an opportunity for students to observe how the skills they've learned in class can be applied in a real clinical environment.

What they have discovered regarding the heart, now they're listening to the nurse explain EKGs, or how blood pressure readings work; they also get to observe these through ultrasound images," she elaborated. "At every station we visited, as the professionals discussed specific terminology related to their careers, you could see the excitement in the children’s eyes.

BCA senior Emmalyn Fischer mentioned that she was unaware of the numerous career opportunities available within a hospital environment.

The most important lesson I've learned is realizing how many individuals are ready to assist you along your journey," she said. "There are numerous pathways one can choose from.

The BCA program at Service High School assists approximately 175 students, as stated by Williams, and serves as an lottery-based program.
