In Boone County, eligible families can amplify their food stamp benefits twofold via the Access to Healthy Food initiative at the Columbia Farmers Market.

On Tuesday, the farmers market revealed a contribution of $30,000 from the Veterans United Foundation toward their initiative.

The Access to Healthy Food initiative enables low-income households to buy fresh, locally sourced produce affordably.

Corrina Smith, who serves as the executive director of Columbia Farmers Market, stated, “It makes a significant difference. We assist in extending individuals’ financial resources.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture forecasts Food costs are expected to rise by 3.5 percent in 2025. , cost continues to be the primary factor in determining what families can afford to eat.

"The current cost is a significant hurdle. Food prices at grocery stores are increasing, and this trend isn’t likely to shift shortly. Therefore, the Access to Healthy Foods initiative offered by the farmer’s market holds greater importance during this period," noted Lynn Eaton, a registered dietitian from Bamboo Nutrition based in Columbia.

Program participants use their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards to obtain tokens for shopping at the market. The Columbia Farmers Market also provides benefits through the Access to Healthy Food initiative coupled with the Double Up Food Bucks program. This allows eligible buyers to get an additional matching amount of up to $60, enabling them to effectively convert $60 into $120 for spending at the market.

Smith characterized these initiatives as having "a significant effect on individuals' food expenses."

Eaton and Smith mentioned that the perks for customers extend beyond mere economic savings; they also provide significant health advantages.

"The broader your range of food choices, particularly fresh produce like fruits and vegetables, the healthier it is for you," Eaton stated.

Smith highlighted the importance of freshly harvested foods. "The produce was gathered either the previous day or on the same day, ensuring it’s at its maximum nutrient content," she stated.

As per Smith, the main emphasis is that everybody possesses the capability to consume fresh and locally sourced produce.
