Mayor Steps Down: Family, Health, and Career Call Him Home

ANNISTON, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Mayor Jack Draper of Anniston will step down effective Friday, May 2, 2025.

"When I won reelection in 2020, I expected my term to conclude on November 4, 2024. However, during the spring of 2021, state laws were amended to extend our terms by an additional year. Therefore, I did not imagine that I would still be serving as Mayor at this juncture," stated Draper in his announcement.

He mentioned that he needs to concentrate on his family, well-being, and professional life, stating that he feels content with this choice as it is the most beneficial one for his loved ones.

Draper has been serving as the mayor for the last eight and a half years.

Chief Nick Bowles of the Anniston Police Department praised the mayor for his work.

I truly appreciated Jack since he consistently showed strong support for the police. As a lawyer within the judicial framework, such backing isn't always common among lawyers. His unwavering endorsement of law enforcement led him to frequently meet with us and discuss upcoming needs whenever he visited, making this aspect his most significant contribution during his tenure.

Mayor Draper expresses his belief through prayer that the city of Anniston will keep progressing towards the future.
