North Platte Initiative Provides Vital Domestic Violence Resources

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - Following the recent domestic violence cases that have cast a shadow over the North Platte community, numerous individuals are stepping forward to increase public consciousness about the issue.
In reaction to this violence, the Program for Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Assistance (RDAP) in North Platte is striving to both maintain community awareness regarding domestic violence and offer maximum safety measures for individuals seeking assistance.
Taylor Hicks, who serves as the advocacy coordinator for RDAP, mentioned that currently, RDAP operates five secure residences for both victims and their families, addressing a significant gap within the North Platte community.
"During my two-year tenure here, we've seen a rise in both male and female clients. Given our location, programs such as RDAP are essential since these victims have limited alternatives," Hicks stated.
In light of the increased focus on domestic abuse incidents, Jennifer Bonynge, who leads RDAP as its executive director, is stressing to everyone that being informed is crucial since many such cases tend to be hidden away.
"You usually won’t witness a victim stepping forward. This issue remains highly personal. Domestic violence carries significant stigma. Increasing public understanding of what occurs within our communities is positive. Generally, victims handle their circumstances independently," explained Bonynge.
Should community members wish to participate, RDAP provides access to several Green Dot certified trainers. Additionally, the organization offers support materials specifically designed for individuals who have previously been offenders.
"When reviewing the recent reports, we often see individuals multiple times each month. These people may come in due to incidents of domestic violence or choking. In terms of recidivism, these perpetrators aren’t just repeat offenders when it comes to domestic abuse, stalking, harassment, and choking; they also end up facing charges involving fresh victims," explained Bonynge.
Should you or anyone you're aware of require assistance, reach out by calling their crisis hotline at 308-534-3495.
