SNAP Day of Action Emphasizes Critical Need for Food Security

Supporters throughout Vermont participated in a regional effort on Wednesday urging lawmakers to oppose a plan that might limit food aid to underprivileged households and burden the state’s local food sector.

"Our objective is to make sure nobody in this nation faces hunger," stated Anore Horton, the Executive Director of Hunger Free Vermont, at Wednesday’s event.

Horton highlighted the collaborative approach involving all of New England and New York State.

"Each state in New England along with New York is taking part. We aim for every Northeastern member of Congress to receive our message. This will significantly help in preventing these cuts," Horton stated.

SNAP's Financial Impact in Vermont

Aside from improving food accessibility, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) greatly boosts the state’s economy. As per state statistics:

• More than 600 local stores are supported by SNAP.
• It contributes $155 million to Vermont’s economy each year.
• Should the federal cuts go ahead, Vermont might encounter approximately $140 million in additional expenses from 2026 through 2034.
