Louisiana's Top Doctor Addresses LASBHA State Conference in Pineville 2025

PINEVILLE, La. (KALB) - On May 1, 2025, Louisiana’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ralph Abraham, addressed the Louisiana School-Based Health Alliance (LASBHA) during their annual conference held in Pineville. He expressed deep appreciation for their work towards enhancing the well-being of kids and adolescents across the state.
A significant number of these healthcare-focused schools are located in rural areas," Abraham explained. "Our students often have limited access to medical professionals. The presence of health care centers within these educational institutions fills the void between large hospital facilities and individual practitioners such as myself. It's crucial not to overlook the potential impact we could make on these young lives. While treating illnesses is important, addressing mental and physical health concerns early through preventive measures becomes essential particularly when these resources are available.
During his speech to the coalition, Dr. Abraham stated that his office must focus more on raising awareness about vaping among young people.
Abraham told the crowd, "The belief is that 'Vaping isn't anywhere near as harmful as smoking.' While we definitely prefer they avoid smoking, we also don't want them vaping. Because, as we understand now, vapes contain numerous substances that could be fatal."
The conference changes venues annually, and this year presents an opportunity for people throughout the state to explore Cenla.
"We have agencies and groups ranging from New Orleans to Shreveport participating, which makes it wonderful to host it here," stated Jennifer Firmin, President of LASBHA.
Michelle Harris, a physician assistant at Natchitoches Parish School-Based Health Centers, expressed enthusiasm saying, "We're thrilled. Since we're locals from Natchitoches, we won't have to travel too far. The event usually takes place in different parts of the state each year. This time, with everyone coming here, we get to showcase our town and its attractions."
This initiative is part of the efforts led by the Surgeon General along with Governor Jeff Landry aimed at 'Making Louisiana Healthy Again.'

In the State Senate, legislators moved forward with Senate Bill 14 This proposal aims to remove certain additives from the school lunch program, add warning labels to specific items at grocery stores, and mandate ongoing nutritional education for doctors focused on metabolism and health.
We in Louisiana currently face challenges in elevating our healthcare standards to what I believe should be considered nationwide norms," stated Abraham. "This issue stems from multiple factors. However, ever since Governor Landry assumed leadership 15 months ago, he has tasked me and my colleagues in high-ranking cabinet roles with addressing and resolving these issues. He comprehends the situation thoroughly.
Tackling the worries and energizing those at the forefront, striving to improve the health of Louisiana’s young people.
School health centers are essential," stated Abraham. "We require them. We need them. They are important, and we're here to back this initiative.
