Chicago Health Officials Report Two New Measles Cases

CHICAGO ( WGN )—Health authorities in Cook County have verified two more instances of measles, raising the state's overall number of reported cases to three.

The Chicago City Public Health Department and the Cook County Division of Public Health Announced on Wednesday was news of two cases: One patient is from a suburb with an undetermined vaccination status. The second individual, residing in Chicago, reportedly traveled abroad via O'Hare International Airport during early April, as stated by public health authorities.

What are the initial signs of measles to watch out for?

"The person had previously received one dose of the MMR vaccine," the health authorities stated.

Both individuals were placed in isolation upon diagnosis.

Following the confirmation of cases, health authorities outlined the following locations where possible exposures may have occurred:

  • Monday, April 21: Chicago Public Library – Independence Branch, located at 4024 N. Elston Avenue.
  • Monday, April 21: Fittingly Delectable, 3939 W. Irving Park Road
  • Tuesday, April 22: O'Hare Airport, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., particularly Terminal 1
  • Wednesday, April 23: O'Hare Airport, 10 AM–8 PM, particularly Terminal 1
  • Friday, April 25: Aldi: 7235 39th Street, Lyons, Illinois 60532, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, April 27: Location - Shell at 3901 South Harlem Avenue, Stickney, Illinois 60402, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Monday, April 18: Mobile Unit: 2945 South Harlem Avenue, Berwyn, Illinois 60402, from 10:20 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The news comes one week after Illinois health officials reported the state’s first case, which stemmed from a diagnosis downstate in Marion.

Health authorities state that signs of measles consist of a rash, elevated body temperature, coughing, a stuffy nose, and inflamed, teary eyes. These indications may manifest between seven to twenty-one days following infection.

In the previous year, the Illinois Department of Public Health documented 67 instances.
