"Flock Together for Mental Health" Spotlights Local Resources

In May, which marks Mental Health Awareness Month, Luzerne County is adopting an innovative method to promote consciousness about this issue. As part of a collaborative initiative, emerald-colored flamingos are appearing throughout the region to highlight available mental health services and acknowledge the organizations involved.

The initiative titled "Flocking for Mental Health" is spearheaded by Luzerne/Wyoming Counties Mental Health and Developmental Services. They are currently honoring Luzerne County for its steadfast dedication as demonstrated through initiatives such as Crisis Intervention Team training, Critical Incident Stress Management, and Treatment Courts. These endeavors aid first responders, front-line staff, and those seeking rehabilitation.

"I believe that occasionally individuals might have a certain image in mind when they consider what mental illness appears to be, but it actually has no distinct appearance. Anyone from any walk of life can experience it. It's crucial we recognize this since one only becomes aware of their potential need for these services once the situation arises," stated Tara Fox, who serves as the administrator for Luzerne and Wyoming County’s mental health and developmental services.

Approximately one out of every five individuals receives a mental health diagnosis, prompting the county to urge residents to reach out for assistance whenever necessary. Available resources consist of the nationwide 988 hotline as well as the Family Services Association support line at (570) 829-1341.
