Milwaukee's Beans & Barley Temporarily Closes as Health Dept. Takes Action

The Milwaukee Health Department briefly closed a well-liked restaurant on the east side on Wednesday due to multiple health code infractions.
For many decades, Beans & Barley has been located in Milwaukee's east side. It sits at the intersection of Oakland and North.
"During the review, MHD found several infractions, which led to critical violations and resulted in a rating of 44%. Officials promptly ordered the cessation of activities. Major concerns involved inadequate hand washing procedures, refrigerated foods kept at inappropriate temperatures, and goods past their expiration dates being stocked," stated Caroline Reinwald, who serves as the public information officer for the Milwaukee Health Department.
WISN 12 News acquired the inspection document which detailed 20 infractions. Among these were several critical issues capable of causing illness, including employees neglecting correct hand washing protocols, numerous food products kept at temperatures exceeding the mandated 41-degree limit, and pasta with expiration dates over seven days past.
Following a standard inspection on Wednesday, the health department ordered the immediate closure of the facility. However, inspectors revisited the location on Thursday morning and found that all critical violations had been addressed, allowing the business to resume operations.
"It was quite wild since we had never experienced anything like this before. However, we managed to pull it off and we're grateful for the direction provided," stated co-owner Jim Neumeyer.
Neumeyer mentioned that they thoroughly cleaned the premises late Wednesday and early Thursday, addressing and rectifying numerous violations.
"Occasionally, items slip away, and you must regain control over them. We’re thankful for the direction provided by the health department to manage this situation,” Neumeyer stated. “Fortunately, earlier today, the health officials confirmed with us saying, yes, everything’s fine; you can proceed.”
Beans & Barley had another encounter with the health department last autumn when an An employee has tested positive for Hepatitis A. The facility stayed operational as the health authorities kept an eye out for further instances of illness.
Neumeyer stated that the case is unconnected, and Wedn
Esday's violations will not occur again.
"We're simply aiming to excel at maintaining our renowned high standards of quality and safety," Neumeyer stated.
WISN 12 News talked to someone who frequently visits the restaurant.
“I have been visiting this place since 1979 and have always enjoyed my meals,” stated Susan Modder. “It truly is a gem for our community.”
WISN 12 News reporter Kendall Keys questioned, 'Has this altered your view of the company?'
“Oh, no. My husband and I are heading in for lunch,” Modder stated.
The proprietor of Beans & Barley arranged for a food safety training session for employees with the health department at the end of this month. The inspectors plan to return approximately two weeks from now to ensure compliance with all regulations.
